Smyrna, GA -- Cobb Country law enforcement officials shot and killed
a man early Monday after a routine traffic stop ended in gunfire and a brief
high-speed chase, authorities said.
The man, whose identity was pending, died while being rushed to the hospital.
The incident happened shortly before 5:30 a.m. near the intersection of South
Cobb Drive and Highlands Parkway.
The incident began after police pulled over a pick-up truck that tried to
flee the scene. The driver of the truck wrecked the vehicle a few feet away
after colliding with the center median, police said.
The Smyrna officer was attacked by the man with a pair of bolt cutters. An
officer who had just arrived on the scene shot the truck driver, police said.
The suspect managed to get into one of the officer's cars and fled down South
Cobb Drive before he crashed into a wooded field.
Police said the officer who was attacked was being treated for wounds,
although they were not believed to be life threatening.
