SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) - An unmarked police car that had
a riot gun and ammunition in its trunk was stolen from
the Lincoln Mall, police said Friday.

Chief Robert J. Voas said the car was stolen Thursday.
Deputy Chief Joseph F. Parenteau takes the car home
because he is on call around the clock and had stopped
at the mall to shop, the chief said.

"It happens to everyone," Voas said when asked
if police were embarrassed. "I'm surprised it hasn't
happened sooner."
