OREGON -Police would like to ask Norman Gould what he planned to do with the case of dynamite stashed in his car trunk.
But late Sunday, a day after they found Gould’s handcuffs abandoned with a stolen police cruiser in the Clackamas County foothills, investigators had not caught the 25-year-old Silverton man they call "obviously desperate."
Authorities said they were concerned about what was missing from the police vehicle; a high-powered assault rifle and as many as 20 bullets.
Gould, who managed to steal the Silverton patrol car while in custody Saturday night, probably fled into the woods with the AR-15 police rifle after crashing the vehicle near Molalla, authorities said.
A flashlight and an officer’s cellular phone also were missing from the marked car, which Silverton police said was the department’s newest and fastest cruiser.
A 50-member search team combed miles of rugged forested terrain as they conducted the search. In addition to the Clackamas County sheriff’s Special Weapons and Tactics Team, Silverton police got help from Marion County sheriff’s deputies and an Oregon State Police helicopter during the overnight search of the sparsely populated area.
Strovink said residents in the area should call 9-1-1 if they see Gould or find signs he is still hiding in the area.
Authorities described Gould as extremely thin and about 5 feet, 10 inches tall, with short brown hair, hazel eyes and wearing a black T-shirt.
