Escape Suspect Stole Patrol Car after Shooting Deputies

A 44-year-old Shasta Lake man accused of shooting two
Shasta County sheriff's deputies last year during an
escape will go to trial Sept. 23, 2003.

John Edward Knowles II has pleaded innocent to 11 felonies,
including attempted murder of a police officer with use of
a gun, escape, car theft, possession of methamphetamine and
being a felon in possession of a gun.

Knowles had been arrested on suspicion of drug violations
Dec. 27 when he allegedly pulled out a concealed gun, shot
deputy Robert Sandbloom and then escaped in his patrol car.


Knowles disappeared for several hours, allegedly stole
another car, and shot deputy Tom Moon before being shot
at least five times himself and then re-arrested.
