SEATTLE - A man arrested for investigation of auto theft, handcuffed and put in a police car managed to slip behind the wheel and drive off Wednesday night, leading officers on a chase before he crashed and escaped on foot.

Police brought in tracking dogs and a helicopter and recaptured the man late Wednesday night in woods along Harbor Avenue in West Seattle, police spokesman Rich Pruitt said.

No one was injured. The man in his late 20s was not immediately identified.

After his initial arrest downtown, the man managed to get his cuffs in front of him and make his way into the front seat of the police car, Pruitt said.

Police chased the squad car across the West Seattle Bridge and onto Harbor Avenue before it crashed and the man took off just after 9 p.m.

A helicopter from the King County Sheriff Department used infrared tracking equipment to locate the man and directed officers and police dogs to the area a few blocks away from the crash scene.

Pruitt said the man "resisted violently" when cornered and attacked one officer. Pruitt said the officer suffered a minor cut.

The man was eventually subdued with the help of a police dog and was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where he will be placed under guard.

Pruitt said the man still had the handcuffs on when he was recaptured.
