Sardis police and Panola County Sheriff deputies pursued a wanted man over the course of an hour Sunday morning, before finally arresting him.
In the process, one Sardis
police officer and one Panola County deputy were
injured. One had been hit in the face and
suffered bruised ribs, while the other suffered
leg abrasions. Both were treated and released
from the hospital.
The suspect, 21-year-old Kedric Norwood, also
suffered minor injuries, but was released from
an area hospital and booked into jail at about
9:15 a.m.
Norwood was wanted in Illinois and Iowa for
felony fleeing. Most recently, he was a person
of interest in a shooting in Rock Island, Ill.
Sunday's chase started at around 5:00 a.m. in
Sardis, when an officer stopped a red, Chevrolet
Silverado pick-up with
Georgia plates. The vehicle had evaded a
deputy earlier that morning.
The driver pulled over at the Kangaroo Express
on Lee Street. It was occupied by a female
driver and a male passenger, Kedric Norwood.
Norwood allegedly gave police a fake name, and
then took off running behind the store into a
field.
Marcel Jojola, the Sardis police chief, said,
"We found narcotics at that location, which we
believed that he tossed."
Chief Jojola said that the police officer and
deputies, who had come to help, chased Norwood
but lost the suspect when he jumped into a
ditch.
Authorities then alerted local motels with a
description of Norwood's tattoo, which is in the
shape of the state of
Mississippi.
Soon, Jojola said, "We received a call from the
Super 8 Motel that the subject was there, trying
to get a room for the night."
When officers arrived, Norwood tried to run
again. This time, he picked a door that led to a
storage room. An officer and a deputy fought him
inside, but he managed to escape. He jumped over
a couch in the lobby to get out through the
front door.
Norwood then got in a brand new, Sardis patrol
car.
