SAN DIEGO OFFICER INJURED BY SUSPECT DRIVING STOLEN BORDER PATROL VEHICLE

(11-09-2004) - A police officer was injured Tuesday when a U.S. Border Patrol cruiser struck him at the end of a pursuit involving a suspect behind the wheel of a USBP vehicle taken overnight.

The pursuit began when an SDPD officer spotted the stolen law enforcement vehicle in the 2200 block of Dairy Mart Road in the Nestor area shortly before 7 a.m., authorities reported.

The fleeing man, later identified as Johnnie Wilson, 32, allegedly led U.S. Border Patrol and SDPD personnel to the north and east, then stopped outside a power plant off Mount Miguel Road, an unpaved rural route in Chula Vista.

Wilson was taken into custody with the help of a service dog that bit him on the arm, SDPD Sgt. Rod Vandiver said.

While the officers were moving in on the suspect, a USBP cruiser backed into a San Diego patrolman, pinning him against his squad car. Medics took him to a hospital for evaluation of leg and chest injuries.

The injured officer's name and medical condition were not immediately available.
