Sgt. Devin Keen, a K-9 officer with the Floresville Police Department is listed in stable condition at South Texas Regional Medical Center in Jourdanton, a hospital spokesman said June 23. His K-9 partner, Zorro, was not injured.

According to Floresville police Lt. Jesse Evins, Keen was transported there after experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion during a manhunt. The lieutenant said that at approximately 2:30 p.m., Keen was one of several officers who responded to assist troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). Jason Reyes, a DPS spokesman said the troopers were attempting to execute a traffic stop on I-37 involving Raul Reyes Jr., 26, of Poth, who was wanted on an arrest warrant from Wilson County.

Reyes then stole Keen’s patrol car, with Zorro inside, and fled northward on the interstate. The chase lasted for approximately 7 miles, Evins said, before the suspect drove into brush and the vehicle became stuck. He fled on foot and was later captured by officers from several agencies.

Keen and fellow Floresville officer, Patrolman Dan Small Jr., were in the area assisting the Three Rivers Police Department with narcotics enforcement activities. Small was not involved in the pursuit, Evins said.
