Personal property taken from an unmarked police car July 16 has been recovered;
however, police still are looking for a stolen .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun.
According to a police report released Tuesday, a billfold, assorted papers, police identification,
clothing and a checkbook belonging to narcotics Officer Bill Mabe was found Monday morning
in some weeds on the Concho River bank in the 1400 block of South Concho Park Drive.
The recovered items, plus the handgun and $230 cash, were stolen after someone smashed
a window of Mabe's car, which was parked behind Western Mattress near downtown San Angelo.
Police questioned a suspect who fit the description of a man Mabe said he saw near his car
earlier in the evening, but the man was not arrested.
"We served a search warrant at the apartment complex where the suspect lives, but none of
the stolen property was recovered," Detective Brian Selke said.
Officers conducting the initial investigation said they spotted pieces of broken auto window
glass in the suspect's auto, but no stolen property was found in the vehicle.
Mabe said the suspect's vehicle was parked next to his car, but had been driven to another
location when the burglary was discovered about 7:15 p.m.
