San Jose, CA - Mental Case Tries to Steal Ambulance - Steals Police Car - Chase - Rams Patrol Cars - Crash - Officer Injured

A San Jose police officer was hurt Tuesday after a scuffle with a man who rammed into other officers with a stolen patrol car.
Police said the incident began around 1 a.m. near Kiely Boulevard and Saratoga Avenue.

Investigators said the man was headed to the hospital for a mental evaluation when he tried to take control of the ambulance he was riding in.

The man then ran off and helped a couple fix a flat tire, according to police.

A woman in that car told NBC11 that the man appeared normal when she first met him. She said he even rolled her spare tire down the street in order to fill it with air. But the woman said he then got in the car and drove off.

Police were able to track down the stolen car, but they said when they attempted to take the man into custody, he stole a police car.

Police said the man rammed two other squad cars before crashing into a wall.

One officer was hurt in the crash, but his injuries were not considered serious, according to police.

The man was then taken to the hospital.

There is no word on his condition.
