Suspect hits police chief in head with sign and then steals police chief’s car

A Geneva County man is in jail this morning on more than a dozen charges,
including assault on a police officer and the theft of his patrol vehicle.
Samson Police Chief Anthony Stewart is lucky to be alive.
Earlier this week, Chief Stewart got out of his patrol car to question a man
carrying a public street sign.
Reportedly, the man smashed the sign over Chief Stewart’s head. The man
then got into the patrol car, and took off with the chief hanging from
the moving car.
Police arrested 44-year-old Danny Bess at his mother's apartment in Samson.
Bess allegedly got out of the patrol car and stole a second vehicle before
leading authorities on an hour-long high-speed chase.
Chief Stewart says it's a miracle that no one was badly injured in the incident.
Additional charges are pending.
