Police are trying to find the thief who stole a Salt Lake County Sheriff's car Wednesday night.

The car was recovered  blocks away from where it was taken. Sheriff's Lt. Don Hutson said no guns were stolen, but the thief did take other police and personal items from the car. Hutson did not specify what they were.

The deputy was helping firefighters treat a person who passed out in the Wal-Mart at 900 East and 4700 South. When the deputy exited the store, his squad car was missing, Hutson said. The deputy had left the keys inside, Hutson said, and the deputy could not remember whether he locked the car. Some police leave their vehicles running an carry an extra set of keys to lock and unlock cars.
