SACRAMENTO, Calif. --
A handcuffed suspect in a car-theft case, who drove away in a police car, according to authorities -- was arrested early Thursday morning.Police said they arrested Phaythoune Khouanmany at around 1 a.m. Thursday without incident. Authorities said they originally arrested Khouanmany in north Sacramento Wednesday because -- they believe -- he stole two Mercedes Benz vehicles from Sacramento Kings guard Bobby Jackson's Placer County home. They said Khouanmany somehow managed to climb into the front seat of the patrol car and drive away. One of the officers said he was able to grab a hold of the car as it sped off.
"He was half inside the vehicle as the vehicle continued down the street, until it got to the point where speeds got so high, he had to get off," said Sacramento Police Department spokesman Sgt. Justin Risley.
Police said the officer suffered moderate injuries when he hit the pavement.
The patrol car was later found a few miles away on Las Palmas Avenue, but Khouanmany was nowhere to be found. Witnesses said they saw him run into a nearby market. His image was caught on videotape in one of those stores in the mall. He did not appear to have handcuffs on anymore.
Authorities said Khouanmany was also wanted in connection with other crimes as well.
"We're looking at him involved with some assault with a deadly weapon cases we have," Risley said.
Police said they arrested two other men in connection with the thefts. Authorities said they found the rims from Jackson's cars in their possession.
