YORK COUNTY, S.C. -- Parts of a sheriff's patrol car lie among the leaves and mud along Charlotte Avenue in Rock Hill. It was there police said a woman crashed her boyfriend's cruiser after stealing it early Tuesday morning.

They said she ran to a nearby fraternity house looking to hide. Mike Alway was watching TV inside.

“She knocked on my door, asking to see if she could hide in my house. I asked why and she said she wrecked her boyfriend's car. I looked out and it was a police cruiser,” Always said.

The Winthrop senior told the woman he couldn't help her and quickly closed the door and called police.

“I didn't know what to think. It was just really crazy where someone would steal a police car,” he said.

Police said 34-year-old Angelita Sanchez told them her boyfriend, Anthony White, had just broken up with her. He works as a York County Sheriff's Deputy. Sanchez said that's why she stole his wallet and patrol car.

Police said Sanchez drove about a mile from her apartment before crashing. She hit a wall not far from the Winthrop campus.

Kathy George lives across the street and heard the patrol car crash.
“It could have been anywhere, at least it was that wall. It could have come right on into our house,” George said.

Neither the York County Sheriff's Department nor Rock Hill police would comment on the case.
