Handcuffed Suspect Steals Police Car

A Long Island man is accused of
stealing a police car while handcuffed
in the backseat.
Riverhead police said Joseph Butler, 20, was
sitting in the back seat of the police car at about
9 p.m. Thursday when he decided to steal it.
Police had stopped Butler for a traffic violation.
Butler was able to get the handcuffs in front
of him, climb into the front seat and steal the
police car.
Suffolk County police later apprehended
Butler on Route 25.
He is charged with grand larceny, criminal
mischief, escape, false impersonation and
criminal possession of stolen property.
