A Rockingham woman stole a sheriff’s office car and led two agencies on a high-speed chase from the Cordova area to Horseshoe Road off U.S. 1 Saturday.

Courtney Chance, 30, of 105 Walnut Lane, Rockingham, was arrested and charged with multiple counts including two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, larceny of a motor vehicle, fleeing or eluding arrest with a motor vehicle and numerous traffic citations. Bond was set at $200,500.

Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Mark Gulledge explained Monday morning that officers responded to a domestic violence call at 118 Liberty Drive, Rockingham, and Chance was initially placed under arrest for resisting, obstructing or delaying a police officer.

“She was handcuffed and placed in the car, but by the time the deputy could return to transport her to the Magistrate’s Office, she got the handcuffs around from behind her and took control of the car,” he said. “The chase lasted about 30 minutes, and she eventually surrendered on Horseshoe Road in the southern part of the county.”

Witnesses said before Chance left the yard, she rammed another sheriff’s office cruiser with the one she stole.

“One deputy received minor injuries, and was treated and released,” Gulledge said.

Among the traffic citations issued to Chance was a speeding violation of 80 miles an hour in a 35 mile an hour zone, left of center, two stop sign violations, careless and reckless driving and speeding to elude arrest.
