Nebraska drunk teenager rolled a stolen Nebraska state patrol cruiser - ends with crash

Oct. 6, 2003

RICHLAND, Neb. (AP) - A teenager rolled a State Patrol cruiser just east of town after he stole the vehicle and led authorities on a 60-mile chase Sunday following his arrest for drunken driving in Omaha.

The 17-year-old Lincoln boy somehow took the cruiser after he was secured in the patrol car shortly after the 6 p.m. CDT stop, said Deb Collins, a State Patrol spokeswoman.

The patrol's helicopter helped in the pursuit which was joined by sheriff's departments from Dodge, Colfax and Platte counties and police departments from Schuyler and Columbus.

The cruiser driven by the boy left the road in the North Bend area, hitting a power poll and knocking down some power lines, Collins said.

The teenager continued driving until he rolled the car on U.S. Highway 30 east of Richland, Collins said.

The boy was taken to Columbus Community Hospital as a precaution.

The Dodge County Attorney will handle any prosecution.
