Pima County Sheriff's deputies are searching for a suspect who escaped
authorities in a law enforcement vehicle.
33-year-old Cheyenne Murphy was originally wanted for violating his probation on
a prior charge of endangerment. Now, he could face an additional charge of
auto theft.
It all started Thursday afternoon near Ruthrauff and La Cholla. Authorities say
the fugitive probation unit of the Pima County Sheriff's department tracked down
Murphy outside a convenience store. Officers say they got out of their vehicle,
tried to arrest Murphy, but he took off running. After a chase, officers say
they used a taser to momentarily stun Murphy. But the fugitive managed to jump
into an officer's vehicle and take off with it.
Hours later, the vehicle was located about four miles away, at an apartment
complex near Prince and Stone. But Murphy is still on the run, and authorities
warn he could be dangerous.
"He's had several contacts with police," said Sgt. Paul Leonardi, with the Pima
County Sheriff's Department. "And obviously we feel he's a danger to the
community. If you see him, don't approach him. Dial 911. All law enforcement
agencies are familiar with the individual and they'll take appropriate action."
