Texas Warden Killed in Vehicular Assault. Dragged by Suspect
Car and run over by his own vehicle.
8/3/01
PORT ARTHUR, Texas - A Texas game warden was killed in a grisly
vehicular assault by a female suspect in his department vehicle,
authorities said.
Warden Mike Pauling, 47, was dragged by a vehicle he had stopped
to investigate and when he fell from that vehicle, he was struck
by his department vehicle the female suspect had stolen.
The incident occurred at about 3 am. when Pauling stopped to
investigate a couple who were involved in a disturbance in a vehicle
on the shoulder of Highway 74. He had the female participant wait in
his department vehicle while he spoke with the male participant, who
was still in the drivers seat of the stopped car.
The man suddenly sped away, dragging Pauling alongside the car. The
woman followed in Pauling's vehicle, calling 911 on her cell phone
at the time. When Pauling fell from the man's car, the female driving
his vehicle struck him.
The male suspect was charged with capital murder.
Pauling is survived by his wife and two children.
