— ADA — A Shawnee teen was arrested Friday evening after evading arrest
and stealing a Pontotoc County Sheriff deputy's patrol car.
Jason Paul Nanaeto, 19, of Shawnee was arrested Friday evening after Deputy
Brian Engel witnessed Nanaeto sitting in a car drinking beer at the intersection
of CR 3536 and the 3535 Loop.
"I recognized the subject as Jason Paul Nanaeto, a suspect myself and Deputy
Brad Hollaway had arrested on Feb. 8 for DUI," Engel said.
Nanaeto initially resisted arrest for public intoxication and fled from Engel,
choosing to hide behind a residence.
"I chased after him yelling at him to stop," Engel said. "As I was chasing him
he stumbled and hit the side of a house and fell to the ground."
Once back in police custody, Engel called for assistance and escorted Nanaeto
back to the patrol car.
"I placed him in the back seat and secured a seat belt around him," he said. "At
this time I heard a disturbance coming from the residence which sounded like a
fight. I locked my car doors and ran to the house."
At that time, Engel went inside the residence to break up a fight that was
occurring in the back of the house.
"I yelled at the two men to stop and after a few minutes, I got the fight to
stop and started asking the other people what they were fighting about," Engel
said. "As I was interviewing them I heard a vehicle outside of the residence
take off at a high rate of speed. When I ran outside, I saw my patrol car
heading north towards 32nd street."
Engel radioed Deputy Dan Rudolph and advised him about the stolen police car.
Rudolph was at the Latta school, picked up Engel, and they both pursued
Nanaeto.
"We went west on 32nd St. about two blocks and saw my car on the south side of
the road, which was stopped next to a gate," Engel said. "When we stopped, I saw
Jason running south and I yelled at him to get on the ground. He got on the
ground and I noticed he had worked the handcuffs from behind his back."
By that time, several other officers were on the scene to help restrain the
suspect.
"We attempted to get Jason properly restrained, however he kept resisting and
spit on, and at, several of the officers more than once," he said. "We finally
got his hands back behind his back and placed leg shackles on him. He kept
spitting at us so we obtained a pair of panty hose and placed them over his head
and face to prevent him from spitting."
Nanaeto was transported to Pontotoc County jail where he was charged with public
intoxication, attempting to elude a police officer, resisting arrest, escape,
grand larceny, DUI, and placing body fluid on government employees.
The patrol car sustained minor damage.
A bond of $50,000 was set for Nanaeto by Judge J.D. Miller and is set to appear
in district court today at 1:30 p.m.
