Cop car left running

POCATELLO — A Pocatello police cruiser was unlocked and running when it
was stolen early Saturday morning, a police official said Sunday.
Lt. Jim Peterson said the officer was investigating a disturbance in the area
of Fourth and Center streets when the police cruiser was stolen.
The vehicle was recovered a time later near Seventh and Fremont streets, where
it was crashed into a parked car.
There was no new information Sunday regarding the patrol car theft,
Peterson said.
Police are looking for two Hispanic males wanted for questioning in the case.
Peterson said department policy instructs officers to turn off police cars
and lock them when they exit the vehicle, but he said some situations demand
fast action.
“Sometimes you just have to bail out quickly and do what you have to do,” he
said.
Police reported damage to the patrol vehicle, which was back in service
Sunday.
Peterson said the cost of equipment loaded into police cars, including
computers, radios, video cameras and firearms total about $20,000.
Police did not disclose the name of the officer involved in the patrol
car theft and Peterson said he could not comment about whether or not
disciplinary action will be taken in the case.
Peterson, who’s served on the force for 22 years, said Saturday’s incident was a
first for Pocatello.
