The incident began at 8:38 p.m. near the intersection of Faxon and Eldamain roads in an area of unincorporated Kendall County near Plano, according to a release from the Kendall County Sheriff's office.
Police claim Bjorn S. Roland, 40, fled from the scene of a crash near Route 34 and Eldamain Road, and allegedly fired a handgun several times toward a sheriff's deputy who was searching for him near the Plano YMCA, according to the release.
When the deputy got out of his squad cover to take cover from the gunfire, Roland allegedly got into the unlocked and running squad car and drove it northbound to Eldamain Road, where he allegedly struck a Plano police squad car with the sheriff's department vehicle, the release said.
The Plano squad car had been responding to the scene of the original crash, the release said. Police claim Roland, still in the squad car, drove away after the second crash, and eventually got out of the vehicle on Faxon Road west of Eldamain where he allegedly confronted and threatened officers.
Police then shot Roland, of the 200 block of Keller Street in Plano, who was taken to Valley West Hospital and later pronounced dead, according to the release.
Illinois State Police were still at the location of the shooting about 3 a.m. and were investigating the incident, the release said. Several officers suffered minor injuries in the incident, but were all treated and released.
