Philadelphia - Police Car Stolen by Handcuffed Suspect

02-01-06

(CBS 3) PHILADELPHIA Philadelphia Police are searching for a suspect who stole a police car under bizarre circumstances Tuesday.

Officials said 45-year-old Greg Baxter drove off in the police cruiser after somehow making to the front seat of the vehicle while handcuffed.

Authorities were responding to reports of a robbery in progress near the 1500 block of 68th Ave. in West Oak Lane around 7 a.m. Arriving officers stopped Baxter for questioning, when they discovered he was wanted for a probation violation.

As Baxter was handcuffed in the rear of the vehicle, he somehow managed to crawl through a window in between the front and back seats, put the car in gear, and drive off while officers were standing nearby, police said.

Police said Baxter abandoned the vehicle at 16th and Sparks Streets and fled, still wearing the handcuffs.
