A 28-year-old man briefly stole a patrol car late Thursday afternoon in Center City, apparently trying to run over the police officer, and crashed into a taxi, injuring the cab driver, police said.

About 5:20 p.m., a Sixth District patrol car had stopped a taxi for a traffic violation when Derrick Taylor, of the 5200 Lebanon Street in West Philadelphia, got into the patrol car and sped toward the officer, said Lt. Frank Vanore.

The officer jumped out of the way and the patrol car crashed into the taxi, Vanore said. Taylor was arrested on the spot and was charged with assault on police, vehicle theft and related offense. The cab driver was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital to be treated for minor neck and back injuries.

Vanore said it appeared Taylor intentionally tried to hurt the officer and did injure the cab driver. "Not sure about his motive," Vanore said, "but he's someone who should be off the street."
