Parkin, AR - Suspect Assaults Officers - Steals Squad Car - High Speed 3 Hour, 3 State Chase - Pitted - Crashed

John Griffin is in custody at the Crittenden County Sheriff's Office after allegedly stealing a police car and leading officers on a chase across three states.

Five law enforcement agencies were involved in that c And he is now face charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, fleeing from law enforcement, reckless driving and during without a license among other charges.

Griffin has an extensive record of stealing cars and breaking that law.

"He always runs from the police. Any police. It could have been the police from New York and he would have run from them. But I mean I never thought he would have taken the car," says his neighbor Jasmine James.

James says he's off his medication and has been turned away from psychiatric help:

"He did it because he's schizophrenic and has three different personalities."

Parkin Mayor and Police officer Charles Patterson was coming from the hospital in Memphis around 7AM when he noticed Griffin driving erratically. He then followed him.

"He put his vehicle in reverse and started backing over me. I had to move myself out of harm's way and do it quickly and once I moved he fled the scene quickly," said Mayor Patterson.

After a short chase Patterson and some back up pulled Griffin over and tried to arrest him, but he wasn't going down that easy.

"He scratched and fought with us at the time of the incident then broke loose and stole my car," said Officer Jeremy McNeill.

He drove that police car out of Arkansas and down to Olive Branch, Mississippi.

After that he went up to Memphis speeding down Lamar and Knight Arnold during peak rush hour before going back across the bridge to West Memphis. Police pitted the car into a field in Earle, where Griffin was arrested.

"He's been in my court at least 20 times, and I hope this time the justice system will do something with him because this time he could have killed somebody," said Parkin Police Chief Dan Davidson.
