An inebriated man knocked down a Panama City Beach police officer, got into his police cruiser and escaped the scene of an accident Monday night before being captured, beach officials said.
The suspect, David Tooth, 47, of Christmas Tree Lane in Panama City Beach, also ran over the officer’s foot as he headed westbound on Back Beach Road, PCBPD Chief Robert Harding said. The officer was being evaluated at a Panama City hospital, Harding added.
The incident began with a wreck at the intersection of Back Beach Road and Richard Jackson Boulevard about 8:15 p.m. Monday. While the officer was conducting his investigation, Tooth reached into the window and opened the locked driver door of the cruiser, Harding said. While Tooth was getting into the vehicle he knocked down the officer, Harding added.
Tooth drove for about 2 miles while being chased by other officers before he pulled over and was arrested. Investigators still were dealing with the situation about 10 p.m. Monday. Tooth was charged with grand theft, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence, and fleeing and attempting to elude officers. Additional charges are expected from the crash.
No one except the officer is believed to have been injured in the incident.
The officer’s name was not released Monday night.
