St. Matthews, SC – An off-duty Orangeburg law enforcement officer was killed in Calhoun County, and police think the suspect stole his unmarked patrol vehicle.
Calhoun County Sheriff Thomas Summers says Orangeburg Public Safety Department Captain James Myers was found dead last night. Summers says a family member found the 56-year-old on his property in northwestern Calhoun County.
Investigators say they are looking for 21-year-old Mikai Deen Mahdi, of Richmond, Virginia. He is accused of carjacking a car at gunpoint in downtown Columbia early Sunday. The car was found less than a mile from where Myers was killed in Calhoun County.
Police would not say how Myers was killed, but Summers says they are investigating the case as a homicide. Myers was captain of special operations in Orangeburg, where he served for 30 years.
