A suspected car thief beat a guard, rammed a sheriff's cruiser and forced
authorities to lockdown several neighborhoods during a pursuit through the
streets of Orange County, according to police.
Investigators said sheriff's deputies initially pulled over a stolen car near
the Huntington on the Greens apartments located off John Young Parkway Friday.
Three people, including driver Charles Conyers, attempted to flee from officers,
detectives said.
Officers said two of the men were taken into custody but Conyers ran into the
Park Central apartments and attacked a guard at the gate.
"They got into a physical altercation, steals his vehicle and then takes
off," Orange County sheriff's Cmdr. Jeff Stonebreaker said. "Before he could
even turn around, our bad guy ran into one of our K-9 units. So, we are just
bringing in all the players at this point."
Conyers was able to escape officers and at some point hit a sheriff's vehicle,
according to the Local 6 report.
A K-9 unit eventually found Conyers hiding in a homeowner's shed and he was
taken into custody.
The two people taken into custody by officers will likely not face any charges
in connection with the incident, police said.
However, Conyers faces aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and
grand theft charges.
Conyers was recently released from prison on a drug-related charge.
