A masked, shotgun-carrying man was shot Sunday morning in San Francisco by an off-duty Oakland police officer whose car he was trying to steal, authorities said Monday.

The suspect, Ceasar Johnson, 19, of Oakland, was recovering from his wounds Monday at San Francisco General Hospital. Authorities said he has been arrested on suspicion of carjacking, attempted robbery and illegal possession of a weapon — a sawed-off shotgun.

Authorities said Oakland police Officer Ted Jew had finished working an overtime shift and stopped at the station to get gas for his vehicle.

He was the only customer at the station.

Police said Johnson, wearing a mask and carrying the shotgun, began walking toward Jew in a threatening manner, saying words the officer could not understand.

Jew pulled a semiautomatic pistol that he carries while off duty and opened fire on Johnson from about 35 feet, hitting him several times and causing him to fall to the pavement.

The shotgun turned out to be fully loaded, police said.

Jew, an Oakland police officer since 2001, had not shot anyone before. Following Oakland Police Department policy, he was placed on three days' administrative leave after giving a statement to San Francisco investigators.
