North Hollywood, CA – Police early today recaptured a man who they say slipped out of his handcuffs while under arrest and stole a Burbank Police car.
The man, who was hit in the chest by police gunfire as he drove away, was recaptured after a police dog found him under a bush after a three-hour search in the North Hollywood area, according to authorities and broadcast reports.
The suspect, whose name was not released, was taken back into custody by the Los Angeles Police Department and was being treated for a gunshot wound, Burbank officials said.
The incident began about 2:40 this morning, when Burbank police tried to pull the man over in a routine traffic stop near the Burbank/Tuluca Lake border. Two other people were in his vehicle, said Burbank police spokesman, Sgt. Will Berry.
The man continued driving into Tuluca Lake, where he was pulled over and handcuffed – and then escaped from the cuffs, Berry said. He stole a Burbank police car and Burbank police fired two shots as he fled, Berry said.
The man abandoned the patrol car near Camarillo Street, fled on foot, and was found after a manhunt, Berry said.
The two other suspects remain at large, Berry said.
Police continue to investigate the incident.
