Man allegedly steals police car, thought to be a terrorist
Normandy, MO - 10/4/01

MO - A man driving a marked police car that had been stolen
from the Normandy, Missouri police station lot at 7700
Natural Bridge Road was arrested near Champaign, IL.,
Wednesday morning, about 3 1/2 hours after the theft,
authorities said.

The suspect, a 34-year-old man from St. Louis, told
Champaign County Sheriffs deputies that he took
the police car because he needed a way to get to Washington,
authorities said. Clayton was arrested after he drove away
from a gas station without paying for $17.77 worth of gas,
authorities added. He had no money in his possession.

The police car was stolen about 3:30 a.m. after a sergeant
had left the keys in the ignition and the car unlocked,
Normandy Police Chief John Connolly said.
