An unmarked police car containing a handgun, a tactical rifle and other police equipment, was stolen this week in Newport News.

Between midnight and 8 a.m. Monday , an unmarked police vehicle was taken from outside a detective's residence in the Beechlake Estates area, police spokeswoman Holly McPherson said.

"Inside the vehicle was the detective's handgun, tactical rifle, ballistic vest and various other police equipment," McPherson said.

Just over an hour later, the vehicle was located in an apartment complex in the J. Clyde Morris Boulevard area.

"Some of the equipment was recovered. However, the handgun, tactical rifle, ballistic vest and other equipment was missing," McPherson said.
