New Haven Police are searching for a man wanted for stealing one
of their cruisers early Tuesday morning.

It happened just after midnight on Grand Avenue when police pulled a car
over in a routine motor vehicle stop. Two cruisers were eventually at
the scene.

The driver of the car that was stopped was not carrying ID and was wanted
on other warrants. He was placed in the back of one of the cruisers, which
was equipped with a cage and secure doors.

While officers were talking to a passenger in the suspect's car, somehow,
and police won't say how, the suspect got a window open, got out, jumped
in the other police cruiser and drove off.

The car was spotted a few minutes later on Frontage Road. The car was stopped
and the suspect bailed out and ran off.

So far, he has not been arrested, but police say they know who he is.
