NEW HAVEN, Conn.—A New Haven man who stole a police cruiser while fleeing has been sentenced to nine years in prison.

Twenty-seven-year-old Richard Massenburg was sentenced Wednesday.

Police say Massenburg was fleeing New Haven police on foot when he jumped into an unoccupied police car and sped off, briefly dragging one officer before ramming a second police car.

Police say after the crash Massenburg took off on foot again and eluded police. He was captured a week later.

Massenburg was out on bail when he had another encounter with New Haven police in February when he dropped a gun while fleeing. An officer fired his weapon at Massenburg, who was not hit, but was captured
