Mount Comfort, IN - Handcuffed Drug Suspect Steals Hancock Co. Sheriff's Deputy's Car - 10 Mile Chase - Suspect Shot and Wounded
Police: Handcuffed Man Took Deputy's Car

Man Undergoes Surgery After Wild Chase
MOUNT COMFORT, Ind. -- A man handcuffed after a drug bust was somehow able
to steal a Hancock County sheriff's deputy's patrol car and lead police on a 10
mile chase.
Two deputies fired several shots at Herbert Seay, 28, as he sped away, hitting
him in the elbow, 6News' Ericka Flye reported.
The chase began after a traffic stop at about 4 p.m. on U.S. 40 in Greenfield.
Police said they found drugs and handcuffed Seay behind his back. He was left in
the front seat of the deputy's car with the engine running.
"He was … able to get his hands in front of him and then was able to get over
into the driver's seat and took the car," said Hancock County sheriff's Maj. Joe
Hunt.
Police said Seay kept driving even though he was wounded, leading police on a
10-mile chase until Cumberland police put down stop sticks, forcing him to
swerve off a county road and into a cornfield before ditching the car.
"He jumped out of the vehicle and then ran through the field," said witness
Scott Snyder, who was cutting grass nearby. "Then, I guess police put the dog on
him."
A K-9 bit Seay before he was taken into custody. Police are trying to
determine how he managed to take the car, which had several bullet holes and
shattered windows after the incident.
"He was handcuffed and seat belted in the car. I can't do it. I can't get my
hands from behind me, but those things happen," Hunt said.
Seay was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis, where he underwent
surgery on his arm.
