Monroe, LA - High Speed Police Chase - Suspect Tazerd Attempting To Drive Off in Police Car
MONROE -- A Shreveport man faces felony charges after leading Monroe
police on a chase and trying to steal a patrol car Thursday evening.
Members of Monroe police's Specialized Neighborhood Action Program team were
patrolling the city about 7:17 p.m. when Officer Brandon Waggoner saw a
westbound 2006 silver Lincoln twice cross the center line in the 3000 block of
Louisville Avenue, authorities said.
Waggoner activated his emergency lights and the driver of the car stopped in the
middle of the four-lane road. The officer pulled alongside the car and asked the
driver -- later identified as Eugene E. Stewart, 32 -- to pull into a nearby
parking lot.
Police say Stewart made a U-turn and accelerated to speeds of more than 70 mph
as he headed east on Louisville Avenue. Stewart eventually turned onto DeSiard
Street, heading west in the eastbound lane of traffic at speeds of more than 100
mph, Waggoner said.
Officers reported seeing Stewart's vehicle almost hit two other vehicles at
DeSiard at Renwick streets while still traveling at an excessive rate of speed.
Stewart turned onto Grammont Street with police following closely then pulled
behind a church in the 300 block of South 11th Street and ran away from
the car and his passenger, identified by police as Samuel E. Ingram, 43, of
Eudora, Ark., according to Waggoner.
More police units responded to the scene. The SNAP team was chasing Stewart when
he entered a patrol car through the front passenger door. He was attempting
to drive off in it when police shocked him with a Taser and took him into
custody.
Stewart has been charged with improper lane usage, aggravated flight from an
officer, resisting arrest and unauthorized use of a moveable. Ingram was
arrested on one count of possession of drug paraphernelia. Both were booked into
Ouachita Correctional Center.
