McMullen County — Law enforcement officials were searching late Wednesday for
a man who stole a patrol car from the McMullen County Sheriff's Department.
Officers from several law enforcement agencies were searching near Interstate 37
two miles north of State Highway 99 near Whitsett after the man abandoned the
car and fled on foot, said Deputy Phil Ainsworth of the McMullen County
Sheriff's Department.
The incident began about 4 p.m. Wednesday when an officer from the department
pulled over the man in a vehicle that had been reported stolen.
Ainsworth said he didn't know how the man was able to steal the patrol car.
The man eventually drove it through some brush off of I-37. That's when he
abandoned it.
