A handcuffed prisoner was able to steal the transport vehicle he was in and lead troopers on a high speed chase in Grant County before jumping into the Columbia River to try to get away, authorities said.

Juanito Angel Meza, 21, of Bonney Lake, was caught a short time after the 10:15 a.m. incident that ended at the edge of the Columbia River off Highway 243, about 11 miles south of Mattawa, the Washington State Patrol said.

Meza was in a 2011 Dodge Charger with two bail enforcement officers on a transport, troopers said. No information was released on where Meza was being taken.

The officers stopped to get gas in Vantage and during the stop, Meza — who was restrained with cuffs attached to a chain around he waist — was somehow able to steal the car.

A Taser gun and a handgun were inside in the car at the time, troopers said.

A trooper spotted the Charger speeding down Highway 243 and followed it for about 8 miles until Meza went off the road at the edge of the river, troopers said.

Meza ran from the car and jumped into the river, but was caught soon after, authorities said.

Meza was treated at Samaritan Hospital in Moses Lake for minor injuries, then booked into the Grant County jail on suspicion of felony eluding, possessing a stolen vehicle and driving with a suspended license.
