4/5/99
MANGUM (AP) -- Police here arrested a man in the death of
an elderly Mangum woman.
Officers took the 42-year-old into custody Sunday after he
allegedly set fire to the victim's home, threatened a Mangum police
officer and stole the officer's patrol car, Police Chief Dale Rogers said.
Rogers said Ann Jones, 83, appeared to have died of knife wounds,
but officials are awaiting an autopsy from the state medical examiner's
office.
The suspect is described as an acquaintance of the victim, and had
lived at her residence off and on for about two years.
Police responded to a call of smoke near Ms. Jones' home around 4 a.m..
Officer Jackie Jenkins found the house on fire and called firefighters.
As he approached the house to see if anyone was inside, the suspect
confronted him and threatened him, Rogers said. As the officer backed away,
Jenkins fled in his car.
Firefighters found Ms. Jones inside.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is helping in the investigation.
Rogers said the suspect left an aerosol spray can and a knife in the
stolen police car. He said the man may have been breathing paint fumes
over the past few days.
