Police are saying a man stole a Heritage Creek Police cruiser early Sunday morning and was able to escape. Police later found the car crashed on the 7200 block of Cooper Chapel Road, near McNeely Lake in south Louisville, but with no suspect inside or in sight.
Metro police sent out the helicopter and K-9 unit to assist the nine person Heritage Creek Police Department in a man hunt that lasted for two hours. But, they never found the suspect in the area.
“It’s usually a quiet neighborhood,” said Almon Perry, the Heritage Creek Police Chief. “It’s the same as everyone, but no real violent crimes out here.”
The suspect was originally pulled over in his car on Destiny Cove in Heritage Creek and charged for DUI. He was arrested and placed in the back of the police car, handcuffed and locked in the seat belt. The officer then searched the suspect's Camaro. That's when the suspect took off in the officer’s car.
“He [the suspect] got out of the car. Who knows how? We don’t know how he got out,” said the police chief. “He got in the driver’s seat [of the police car] and took off in the car.”
The car was found about 2.5 miles away from where it was stolen. But with no suspect, only traces of his blood left at the scene of the crash. Leading police to believe the man they are looking for might be injured.
Police are not releasing the name of the suspect, but describe him as a white male from the Okolona area about 5’11”, who was wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans Sunday morning.
The Heritage Creek Police chief says they are going to issue a warrant for the suspect’s arrest Monday and then might release his identity to the public.
