A bizarre series of events unfolded when a psych patient being transported in an ambulance flew into a violent rage.

It started about 2:15 p.m. on Sunday on the Northern State Parkway.  A North Shore LIJ ambulance was transporting a man from Long Island Jewish to South Oaks Hospital.

The patient was identified as Kenneth Ashley, 30, of Jamaica, Queens. Police say he started to viciously attack an EMS member who was tending to him in the back of the ambulance.

The driver heard his partner screaming for help and pulled over. The driver opened the back door and attempted to free his partner.

Police say Ashley then began to chase both EMS workers outside of the ambulance. A passing motorist saw the chase and pulled over to help. Police say Ashley then attacked the Good Samaritan, punching him in the face until he fell to the ground.

Ashley then allegedly turned back to attacking one of the EMS workers whom was lying in the road. Police say he repeatedly smashed him in the face with a laptop computer. The Good Samaritan got back up and attempted to stop the attack. This time he was thrown over a guard rail.

By this time, several NYPD Officer’s stopped and tried to help subdue Ashley. One of the officers had parked his car in the westbound lanes. Officers say Ashley ran across the road and drove off with the officer's car.

The NYPD and Nassau County Police took off in pursuit of Ashley. He crashed the car inside the New York City line. He continued to struggle as officers put him under arrest.

He was taken to the psych ward at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx for evaluation and treatment.

He faces multiple assault charges after the incident.
