Bank robber makes getaway in
police car
LITTLETON, Colo., -- Police in Littleton,
Colo., said a bank robber made his escape after an automobile pursuit by
stealing a police patrol car.
The police said the man stole an elderly woman's car after robbing a bank
Sunday and led an officer who saw the hijacking on a pursuit to an
intersection where the stolen car crashed into a ravine, WKMG-TV, Denver,
reported Monday.
The pursuit became a foot chase but the robber was able to double back
and steal the officer's cruiser, getting away with the car and an
undisclosed amount of money.
The police car was found abandoned about 2 miles from where it was taken.
Officers said police sometimes don't secure their cars if the situation
calls for swift action.
"The risk to the public is greater," Sgt. Sean Dugan of the Littleton
Police Department, told WKMG. "It's more important for us to apprehend the
suspect than to concern ourselves with whether or not we locked our car
doors when we got out. It is extremely rare that a suspect would chance
coming back to where the police car is, especially when there's more police
cars are flooding the area."
