Police are searching for a Letcher County inmate who escaped from custody after stealing the prisoner transport van he was riding in Wednesday.
Stevie Daniel Wynn, 32, of Thornton, managed to climb through a security screen into the driver's area of the van as he was being taken from a court appearance in Hazard to the Letcher County jail, state police said in a news release.
Wynn overpowered the security officer who was driving the van, took the wheel and escaped, police said.
Wynn is 6 feet, 1 inch tall and weighs 160 pounds. He has brown hair and blue eyes and a tattoo on his upper left arm. He was last seen wearing an orange jump suit.
Police are also looking for the stolen transport van. It is a white 2010 Dodge Caravan with a Kentucky official registration plate numbered 4254DD.
