Lee County, SC (WLTX) - Lee County deputies are searching for at least one suspect who they say set an unmarked police car on fire.
The incident took place around in the early morning hours Saturday, March 13.
At about 3:20 a.m., a witness near the Lynchburg Town Hall saw a car on fire. She then notified a neighbor, who is a firefighter, about the situation, and firefighters then responded to the scene.
Investigators have now pieced together a timeline of the events that led up to the fire. They say a contractor's dump truck several blocks away from town hall was broken into. Investigators believe the suspects intended to steal the vehicle, but it got stuck in the mud.
They then moved on to town hall, where they found the patrol car. The ignition of that vehicle was damaged, and the vehicle was then set on fire.
Officers say the burned vehicle is actually just used by officers to go around town and read meters.
