In Florida, a Lee County sheriff's deputy shot a man
twice after he threatened deputies with a knife and
fled in a stolen patrol car, officials said.

28-year-old Michael Lee Majewski was in critical condition at
Lee Memorial Hospital late yesterday.

Deputy Thomas Buchmann fired three times as the Majewski ran -
striking him in the left arm and the upper left back - after
Majewski pointed a weapon at three officers, said Lee County
Sheriff's Maj. Richard Chard.

Officers were responding to a complaint that a man was inside
a trash bin behind a deli, The News-Press of Fort Myers reported.

When Deputy Edward Gazarek approached, Majewski pulled a knife,
Chard said. The man jumped into the Gazarek's patrol car,
which was left running, and sped off.

He led dozens of officers on a high speed chase through south Fort
Myers before he was shot.

Buchmann was placed on paid suspension pending an investigation
of the incident, said Lee County Sheriff Rod Shoap.
