Lafayette Police are searching for a man who briefly stole a police car early Saturday.
Officers went to the 500 block of South Audubon around 5 a.m. to investigate a car burglary, Cpl. Paul Mouton, Lafayette Police Department spokesman, said in a news release.
The officer parked at the end of the victim’s drive way on the street and began working with the victim.
“They heard the police cruiser accelerate down the street from the end of the driveway,” Mouton said.
A Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy found the stolen cop car 45 minutes later in the 100 block of Edie Ann, Mouton said. The suspect did not damage the car or take anything from it.
Police believe the suspect is a white male in his late 20’s who wore a black cap, blue jeans and a dark colored t-shirt. Police ask anyone with information about the incident to call LPD or Crime Stoppers at 232-TIPS.
