At a press conference at police headquarters, North Kingstown officials confirm
a police officer was shot at least once, but was alert and conscious at the
scene, after an incident Sunday afternoon.
NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - The North Kingstown police chief says an officer
wounded during a struggle with a suspect could soon be released from the
hospital.
Police Chief Edward Charboneau says 31-year-old Travis Maiato could leave the
hospital Monday.
Police say Maiato was shot during a struggle with a suspect who stole his
police car. The suspect is identified as 29-year-old David Catalano.
Police say the officer had gone to Catalano's home Sunday afternoon because his
vehicle was matched to a fatal hit-and-run collision minutes earlier in nearby
East Greenwich.
Catalano allegedly grabbed Maiato's gun and fired three times, hitting the
officer in the back and shoulder.
Charboneau told WPRO-AM that Maiato could be released from the hospital Monday.
It's not clear what charges Catalano will face or if he has an
attorney.
