05/28/05

KINGMAN, Ariz. (AP) -- A carjacking suspect was shot and killed early Thursday after a lengthy police pursuit in western Arizona.

The fatal confrontation occurred about 90 minutes after the suspect drove through a checkpoint at Hoover Dam, firing at officers. He later stole a Highway Patrol car and carjacked two other vehicles in Kingman at gunpoint.

The chase ended some 20 miles east of Kingman after officers rammed the car on State Route 93, disabling it.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Frank Valenzuela said the suspect came out of the car armed with a shotgun he'd taken from the Highway Patrol car. Officers shot the man several times, Valenzuela said.

A woman passenger was hospitalized after complaining of respiratory problems. Valenzuela said she was arrested by Kingman police on outstanding felony warrants.

Phoenix police spokesman Tony Morales said the car the man was driving when he ran the Hoover Dam checkpoint had been taken in a carjacking Wednesday night in Phoenix in which a man was wounded.
