JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Police are searching for an escaped inmate from South Carolina whose getaway vehicle was found in St. Johns County, Fla., Thursday afternoon.

James Turner escaped from a South Carolina prison Wednesday night while performing work detail, and his getaway car was discovered abandoned in the 1600 block of U.S. Highway 1, authorities said.

He was assigned to clean carpets with another inmate at the Newberry County Sheriff's Office when authorities said he managed to flee the building undetected and stole a department vehicle equipped with blue lights and police radios.

Turner, 33, was serving a five-year sentence for criminal domestic battery.

Turner is 6-feet tall and weighs 152 pounds.

Those with any information as to his whereabouts are asked to contact the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.
