Antonio Turner confessed to shooting repeatedly at Jackson policeman
DeWayne Collier and attempting a getaway in Collier's patrol car, a police
detective testified Thursday in U.S. District Court in Jackson.
Turner is on trial facing federal charges of interference with commerce by
threats of violence, using a firearm in a crime of violence, a firearm charge
involving carjacking, actual carjacking and being a felon in possession of a
firearm. He faces a maximum prison sentence of 65 years if convicted of all the
offenses.
Jackson police Detective Derrick Jordan testified Turner said he used a
9-millimeter handgun to shoot at Collier's car "until the weapon ran dry." He
then removed Collier from his vehicle, took off and crashed the car before he
was captured by police, Jordan said.
Defense attorneys say police coerced Turner into giving a false confession and
that prosecutors won't be able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Turner
committed the crimes.
Meanwhile, alleged accomplice Cornelius Black testified about Turner's encounter
with Collier immediately before the shooting.
"The police said, 'Freeze!' Antonio said, 'I can't go back to jail, you know
what I'm saying?' " Black testified.
Turner had served time for auto burglary and cocaine possession conviction in
Rankin County and was serving time in Hinds County for another auto burglary
conviction when he was released on probation in March 2007.
He and Turner robbed two businesses before Collier chased them down, Black
testified. Black said he saw Turner "raise a gun up ... then I ran." He said he
heard several gunshots.
Defense attorneys questioned Black's credibility, since he acknowledged lying
repeatedly to police about the circumstances of the July 7, 2008, crime.
Prosecutors allege the two men robbed a payday loan business on U.S. 80, then
robbed a Popeyes restaurant on Robinson Road when Collier spotted them exiting
the restaurant and gave chase.
The driver wrecked the vehicle on Clinton Boulevard. When Collier drove up, the
suspects jumped from the wrecked car with weapons and shots were fired,
according to investigators. Collier was hit at least three times.
Authorities say Turner then stole Collier's patrol car before another officer
spotted the vehicle and pursued it into the Shaw Road area. Turner jumped from
the vehicle, prosecutors allege, before being captured in the wooded area.
They said the handgun Turner used was found on the seat of Collier's patrol
car.
At first Turner told police he was not involved, but when certain evidence and
inconsistencies in his story were revealed, his story changed, Jordan testified.
"Then, he became more forthcoming," he said.
Prosecutors plan to show jurors Turner's videotaped confession today. A
technical glitch prevented the viewing on Thursday.
Turner and Black also have state charges pending related to the robberies and
the shooting of Collier, who survived and underwent several surgeries.
Black has pleaded guilty to federal charges.
Both men were on probation at the time of the shooting. Mississippi Department
of Corrections spokeswoman Tara Booth has said both men were reporting regularly
as required.
